Dirty hands for successful clean-up

In an effort to beautify the community while cleaning up the area, members of Clean Surf Project, in conjunction with Sapphire Coast Tourism and Social Waste Management SA, got their hands dirty on Mandela Day.
The clean-up was a tremendous success and formed part of the organisations’ 67 minutes in celebration of Mandela Day.

The organisation’s Romy Wenzel said, ” This project is proudly sponsored by Sapphire Coast Tourism with the aim to uplift the area, support informal traders, boost local tourism and of course encourage commuters to keep the area clean.” The clean-up took place at the taxi rank and Amanzimtoti River.  The team headed to the Amanzimtoti Lagoon to clear accumulated waste at Amanzimtoti Taxi Rank, the Amanzimtoti Toti river mouth and Beach with most of the litter having washed up from upstream – river, canals, storm water pipes and so forth. These 67 Minutes of community work making a positive difference.  Many thanks to DSW and local council for supporting the clean-up campaign.”

“In addition, while recreational fishing is allowed during lockdown level 3, we would kindly encourage all fishermen to make use of bins provided to stop plastic from entering the ocean and being mistaken for food by bird life. While beach access is restricted, Clean Surf Project is currently focusing on litter problems along the Amanzimtoti River and is planning to conduct a clean-up at Ilanda Wilds in due course. This initiative was in line with the Inkwazi Isu (African Fish Eagle Project) that was launched in March this year. This is an environmental project focusing on the area stretching from Umbogintwini River to Amanzimtoti River and Lagoon. During the clean-up all necessary precautionary measures was followed in line with regulations,” she added.

She also thanked all those who assisted during the day.
