Nirvana for Isipingo strays

Nirvana has rescued several animals in need since the organisation opened its doors six months ago. The organisation was created in memory of her husband, Gord Hausmann.

Nirvana Ramlall is passionate about the protection and rehabilitation of all animals and has dedicated her life this incredible cause. Pet Rescue Isipingo is an organisation run and manned solely by the 39-year-old. She was born and raised in Isipingo and later moved back to her home town following the death of her husband.

“It was a traumatic experience as I had to re-home 14 of my animals. When I moved to Isipingo, I was surrounded by strays and starving dogs. I watched dogs being neglected and abused. Majority of the people were so uneducated as to how to even take care of their pets. It’s not easy to approach people and tell them how to take care of their pet if they are not willing to listen. To those that do, they have been amazing.”

“I do believe some people need second chances if they accept education and my help. I needed to help the community as there was a desperate need for an organisation. I do have a few loyal supporters but it’s not enough to help as many of the animals as I would like to. I’m left to fund it by myself which has taken a toll on my family. There are so many animals in Isipingo that need my help. I will find them, and I will help them. As a rescuer, it’s not easy to walk away from an animal in need. When you feel connected to animals you feel responsible for them. But, a rescuer always has hope.  My biggest challenges are vet bills, vet care, transport, food and fosters. I don’t have a team. I rescue on my own and need help. The community of Isipingo needs to support my organisation because I can’t do it without them. My roots are deep in the area.”

The most rewarding aspect of helping animals is when she can find them their forever home. Nirvana has two daughter, Sanyuri and Sonavli and four fur-babies. Her daily routine includes rescuing, conducting home-checks and feeding hungry strays. She is also working towards formally registering her organisation and appeals to the community for volunteers.
