266 perpetrators convicted for sexual related crimes
In the past year, 356 life imprisonment sentences were handed down to 266 perpetrators.

A TOTAL of 266 perpetrators were convicted for sexual related crimes during the period of 2020/21. This comes after detectives from the Family violence, Child protection and Sexual offences investigations (FCS) succeeded in their investigations.
According to the statistics revealed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) commissioner, General Khehla Sithole, 356 life imprisonment sentences were handed down to 266 sexual offences perpetrators in the past year. The perpetrators were charged for crimes against women, children and vulnerable groups.
The FCS component was re-established in 2010 and it boasts 176 units across the country with nine serial and electronic crime investigation units. These units comprise of members who apprehend those responsible for sexual offences related crimes, and person directed crimes under the age of 18.
Sithole thanked members of the FCS unit for their relentless efforts and successes in the conviction of crimes. He further acknowledge the role played by the communities and non government organisations (NGO) who supported the investigations.
” I commend each of you for ensuring justice for victims of these heinous crimes. While these convictions won’t bring back those we lost, we hope that these life sentences will serve as a deterrent to those who continue to take advantage of our innocent women, children and vulnerable groups,” said Sitole.
In the past year the following successes were achieved: 356 life imprisonment sentences were handed down to 266 accused, 5008 20-year sentences were handed down to 189 accused, 487 accused were handed down 8166 sentences ranging from 10 to 19 years imprisonment and 791 accused were handed down 3717 sentences ranging from one to nine years imprisonment.
