Amanzimtoti bikers put the brakes on drugs

Ward 97 Cllr André Beetge also expressed appreciation towards the positive approach from the public and the biker fraternity for the strict discipline that was maintained throughout the event.

About 150 bikers congregated for the  the anti-drug event in Amanzimtoti and Warner Beach on Saturday, 26 June.  The bikers met at Pipeline Beach in co-operation with SAPS and Metro police from where they departed for a mass ride down Beach Road led by Cllr André Beetge and Metro police. One group then circled back towards establishments at the main beach, while a second departed towards Warner Beach. A delegation from each group consisted of SAPS, CPF, Metro police, political leadership and biker fraternity. The groups visited 16 pubs in the area that pledged their support to implement Covid-19 regulations, not selling alcohol to minors and to maintaining a drug-free social environment.

“It can only be described as a roaring success. We haven’t received any complaints or negative comments from the public. We attribute this to the fact that the event was excellently organised with all the necessary permissions, restrictions and public liabilities in place. We hope to see similar awareness initiatives in the future that SAPS can associate with,” said Communications officer of Amanzimtoti SAPS Captain Charlene van der Spuy.

Ward 97 Cllr André Beetge also expressed appreciation towards the positive approach from the public and the biker fraternity for the strict discipline that was maintained throughout the event.

“People often stereotype the biker community as being an unruly bunch of individuals. This, however, being far from the truth, as the sport is extremely well organised and members are essentially from our community who maybe choose to be a little different, yet who are as much concerned about our and their children’s future. It was both a privilege and honour to guide them on the procedures and to eventually ride at the front of this magnificent event initiated by Tangled Thoughts.”

A special word of appreciation to Captain Govender and the Metro police team that diligently led both processions and managed traffic to ensure the least disruption yet maximum awareness.  While adjusted Covid-19 regulations currently necessitate the closure of all establishments, SAPS and CPF wish to extend an invitation to establishments that were not visited to contact Capt van der Spuy should they wish to sign the pledge and display the certificate on the premises once regulations are adapted.
