Women’s rugby team seeks more players

Captain Jenny Cousins said it has not been easy because the hard lockdown was announced in early 2019, only a few months after the team was formed. “Our team currently has 10 players which is enough for rugby sevens, but we are fortunate because our team is very dedicated,” said Jenny. For a full squad, the team needs a pool of at least 23 players. The last match the team played before the recent lockdown was a friendly against Richards Bay which they lost 54 – 0. While sponsorship for female rugby teams is not as readily available as for their male counterparts, Jenny said she is optimistic about the future when the pandemic is over. “Our immediate goal is to attract more players and grow,” said Jenny.

The team is coached by Damon Cousins and Meluleki Lugayeni. Those who are interested to sign up for the club can either contact the captain on 074 770 2125 or the Amanzimtoti Rugby Club on 071 292 0820.
