Matric results will no longer be published on public platforms

The POPI Act is at the heart of the matter says the education department.

THE Department of Basic Education has announced that matric results will no longer be published on any public platform.

The department’s spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga, said this change was due to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

“The POPIA act came into effect on July 1, 2021. The Department of Education recognises that everyone has the right to privacy. This right included a right to protection against the unlawful collection, retention, dissemination and use of personal information,” Mhlanga said.

Mhlanga added that to comply with the provisions of the Act, the usual practice of publishing the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results on public (media) platforms would not occur.

“In this way, every learner’s personal information, with regards to the outcome of their National Senior Certificate exam, will be protected,” he said.
