Selfless acts of kindness amid water outage

“She was lucky to have water still running through her taps and because she is the person she is she put it out there for anyone to come fill up by her, if you needed water she would fill up all containers."

AN Amanzimtoti resident has asked community members to help with a woman’s water bill, after she provided thousands of litres of water to those who needed it.

“This person has not asked me to do this, this is on me. I have had the pleasure in meeting one of the most generous people in Toti during the last few weeks of flooding and having no water. Her name is Dalene Crawford.” said Ricky Wilson.

Ricky and Ken Piater from K&A Treefeller offered to deliver some water to one of the neighbourhood’s old age homes. When they went to pick it up, he did not know that she was filling up containers of water from her own taps.

“She was lucky to have water still running through her taps and because she is the person she is she put it out there for anyone to come fill up by her, if you needed water she would fill up all containers. She had people and first responders showering at her house. She even did people’s washing,” he said.

He has been worried about her water bill since the first time he went to pick up some water, as they personally filled up 100 five litre bottles three times for the old age homes and for some streets and people who had not had water for over 14 days.

“We delivered the water we got from Dalene to so many people. People I have no idea how many litres of water she used last month, but I’m sure her bill is going to be huge. I have sleepless nights and I didn’t know how I could help her at least pay for her water bill,” he said.

In response to his Facebook plea for people to make a financial contribution, Grant Jackson from Jack’s Tree Felling, donated R500 and a person who wishes to remain anonymous donated R2 000, in an effort to repay her for her selfless act of kindness.

Dalene Crawford said, “When I saw on the WhatsApp groups that people were desperate for water I didn’t hesitate to help them. I feel a community should help each other as we all should stand together. I have received such nasty and negative messages about me giving to the community and ‘expecting’ payment for my ‘good deeds’. I don’t want anyone thinking I did what I did for fame or self recognition, because I most definitely didn’t. Ken and Ricky deserve the recognition, as they were going out delivering the water to the community.”

If anyone would like to make a contribution towards her water bill, WhatsApp Dalene on 078 215 4797.
