Snare Aware called out to ensnared dog in Doonheights

Residents in the Doonheights (Worlds view, Valley and Blue Gum Road) area are urged to keep a look out for this potentially injured dog.

ON Sunday, May 15, Snare Aware’s quiet afternoon was interrupted by a panicked call received from a member of the public, who could hear the wails of a dog in the bush adjoining their property.

“They could see a small tree moving and shaking. Tell tale signs of a dog caught in a snare. Without a moments hesitation two of our team members dropped what they were doing and headed out into the area where they were met with another neighbor who had gone to look around in the bush to find the dog before we got there,” said a member whose identity cannot be disclosed due to safety reasons.

“The neighbour managed to find one snare and gave it to our members. With time not on our side and running out of light and searching with cellphone torches, we managed to remove 9 snares in difficult, muddy terrain,” he said.

The location of the ensnared dog was also identified by the bite marks on the branches of the tree. It is suspected that the dog broke free from the snare and ran off.

The 10th snare unfortunately is likely still attached to the dog who escaped, as there was no sign of it at the location.

Residents in the Doonheights area (Worlds view, Valley and Blue Gum Road) are urged to keep a look out for this potentially injured dog. If spotted, phone the Amanzimtoti SPCA on 031 904 2424.

The team will head back into the area as soon as they can to sweep the rest of the area and remove any snares left behind.
