Toti karate club competes in national championships
The tournament hosted over 1 500 competing karate athletes over the course of the two days.
AMANZIMTOTI JKA Karate had 16 students represent JKA KZN at the 2022 SA JKA National Championships on May 20 and 21 at the Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg.
All provinces in South Africa come together once a year to compete for their national SA JKA colours. It was the first time that the tournament was held since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic two years ago.
The tournament hosted over 1 500 competing karate athletes over the course of the two days, following strict Covid-19 guidelines and protocols.

“Our students have been training exceptionally hard and giving everything they had in them during training at the dojo in preparation for the SA JKA National Championships,” said sensei Michael Thompson.
“KZN JKA came second in total medal count per province at the tournament with Gauteng taking first place. So, we did exceptionally well and the KZN dojos are very proud of our athletes,” he said.
From that, Amanzimtoti JKA club had 31 students represent JKA KZN at the tournament, of which the dojo won 18 medals; 10 gold, four silver and four bronze medals.
Thompson added, “A huge thanks to our amazing instructors at Amanzimtoti JKA who dedicate so much of their time and commitment to their students. Their passion towards the dojo, students and karate is always amazing to see.”
He gave a special mention to three grand champions from Amanzimtoti JKA who won double gold in both kata and kumite respectively. They are Stephan-Cole Mileham, Iris Mukama and Damian Soares.
