Sardines spotted in South Coast waters
Sardine mania hits KZN shores as fishermen begin netting at Margate Beach.
THE sardines have arrived on the South Coast, with hundreds of eager people, fishermen and netters flocking onto Margate Beach today, June 17.
Crowds of people braved the cold weather and icy winds to get down to the beach, to witness the seine netters bringing the ‘silver gold’ ashore. Crates are apparently selling for around R1 500, which is not unheard of early on in the season.

According to the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board, it is very difficult to say when or where the sardines will be next due to a number of reasons. The water visibility is very poor currently as the waters are still a bit muddy. “If you wish to witness the sardines and perhaps take some photos, we would advise that you visit the South Coast while the sardines are in the area,” said head of operations Greg Thompson.
There have been no sightings or nettings in Amanzimtoti as yet.
Updates to follow.
