George Snodey of the Community Crime Prevention Organisation Amanzimtoti (CCPO) said the man had been living with the family for a few weeks and made off with a number of household goods including jewellery and clothes.
“The homeowner called Amanzimtoti SAPS who arrived at the gate, sat in their vehicle and told the family that they cannot open a case because they didn’t have insurance. They made contact with me and asked me what options they have. I then made contact with Colonel Kitching of Toti SAPS who didn’t hesitate to send a van back to the premises and allow the people to open a case,” said Snodey.
On Friday, the CCPO received a tip-off regarding the suspect’s whereabouts, and along with ET Rapid Response officers, they proceeded to Queensmead Mall in Umbilo. “After about a two-hour stakeout, the suspect appeared wearing the homeowner’s clothing. He was quickly apprehended and handed over to an Amanzimtoti SAPS detective,” said Snodey.
More stolen property was recovered at a shop in Amanzimtoti where he had sold it. Snodey warned residents about opening their homes to strangers.
