eThekwini suspends load-shedding for one day

The announcement comes as the City is re-configuring its automated Load-Shedding System.

THE eThekwini Municipality has suspended load-shedding just for today (Wednesday, May 24) in order to enable its teams to prepare for the new, revised load-shedding schedule.

The schedule, which comes into effect on Thursday, was introduced following discussions between eThekwini and Eskom last week.

eThekwini has been on a reduced level of load-shedding and had been excluded from Stages 1 to 3 since the floods in April last year, however, from tomorrow, will be affected by all stages.

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Lindiwe Khuzwayo confirmed the City’s decision.

“To enable our teams to prepare the system for the new schedule, which starts tomorrow, load-shedding has been suspended in eThekwini for today only (Wednesday, May 24). This relief was agreed to by the System Operator to allow the City to re-configure its automated Load-Shedding System for the new schedule to become effective on May 25,” she said.

The new schedule has been designed with blocks now having ‘A’ and ‘B’ notation, which allows for better load management and control.

“Residents are urged to switch off all high-load appliances like geysers, stoves, heaters, air conditioners and pool pumps during power outages and stagger-switching them on once power returns. This is especially critical in those suburbs that suffer from frequent overload trips on return of power after load-shedding,” she said.
