BREAKING NEWS: Werner de Jager dies in jail

It is believed Werner de Jager committed suicide by overdosing on medication while in custody at the Westville Prison.

WHILE there is no official announcement made yet, sources have confirmed to the SUN that Werner de Jager, the husband of slain Amanzimtoti reverend, Liezel de Jager, committed suicide in jail today (April 15).

De Jager was supposed to stand trial in the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court for his wife’s murder on May 10.

Information obtained by the SUN indicated that De Jager died in the morning after overdosing on medication. He was detained at Westville Prison after the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court denied him bail in February.

Ian Cameron, formerly of Action Society, said he knows the news of De Jager’s death. He said an investigation would have to be made to find out how he obtained the substance he used to kill himself.

“What makes it even more curious is that it happened on the anniversary of the death of the two women in the Free State last year after an accident he caused,” said Cameron.

The day also marks two-and-a-half years since Liezel died.

This is a developing story – more details to follow.
