Former Community Crime Prevention Organisation’s (CCPO) George Snodey said he was driving north on the N2 when he noticed a man on the same carriageway pushing a good-looking children’s bicycle.
“I had a look as I went past, and he looked like he could be in his 40s, pushing a very nice-looking children’s bike. I called Michael [Mkhize], the CCPO supervisor, and asked him to come and check it out,” said Snodey.
Mkhize put out a call over the CCPO radio network, and within three minutes, Snodey said CCPO, ET Rapid Response, Blue Security-Durban and Bevan van Vuuren were at the scene and stopped the man for questioning.
After a brief investigation, it was determined that the items had been stolen from a home on Almond Road, Illovo Glen. He was also carrying a few pairs of shoes, a kettle, a sandwich toaster, a scissor jack and a nut spanner. Amanzimtoti Police’s Crime Prevention Unit, which had also responded, took the man into custody.
In a statement, the CCPO said the man took the police and CCPO to the house where he had stolen the items.
“The owner was contacted, and they confirmed that the items belonged to them. The suspect was arrested and detained at the Amanzimtoti Police Station,” it said.
