Car stolen at Doon Heights home

The thieves tried to steal other vehicles on the property but only made off with one vehicle and all the house keys.

A DOON Heights family is still in shock after criminals broke in and made off with a car after stealing its keys and house keys in the early hours of September 20.

The break-in was one of several reported in the greater Amanzimtoti area on September 20 and 21.
Kayla Bell of Meranti Turn said according to surveillance footage, the thieves, a white male and two black males, jumped into the yard from a neighbour’s property.

“They broke the bars of the kitchen window. They also attempted to damage the camera that faces the backyard. The white male came inside the house and he looked to see if there was anyone awake. He walked around the kitchen looking for something and crawled down on all fours looking for something he could take,” said Kayla.

After taking house and car keys from where they were hanging, she said he handed them through the window to someone standing outside. They managed to start the silver VW Up which they drove off with, and could not take the other vehicles as one had a flat battery and they could not find the handbrake of the other one. Kayla said dogs started barking while they were still in the yard and they said they saw them in a white Corolla Cross which they abandoned.

“We stood by the front window and shouted at them to get out of the car. We were in such shock that we didn’t notice that they had taken all the house keys. One black male pointed a gun at me to try and scare me. That’s when my mom’s boyfriend and his son ran out to try and stop them and they shot at them,” she said.

She added that the whole street of Meranti Turn is concerned by the incident because it has been reported to the municipality for a long time that the street lights are not working and it gets very dark at night. A case of burglary and theft was opened at the Amanzimtoti Police Station. The VW Up’s number plate is ND 879533.
