The learners and their teacher, Alice Surmon, spent the day picking up waste along different trails of the reserve. The waste is mostly discarded by people who are too lazy to dispose of it properly. In 2023, the Amanzimtoti Cycle Club permanently closed the cycling trails in the reserve because of vandalism, theft, and illegal dumping. Nomalanga Gumede from eThekwini Municipality’s Department of Solid Waste: Education said that having young children participate in the clean-up was beneficial because it taught them to respect nature.
“It teaches them to look after the environment and to let other children know that to litter is not good,” said Nomalanga.
