FOLLOWING the partial collapse of the N2 Ezimbokodweni River bridge on November 5, the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral), which is responsible for the N2 and its bridges and the N3, said R50 billion has been budgeted to upgrade the N2 between Illovo River and Spaghetti Junction in Durban.

Sanral falls under the national Department of Transport which is headed by Minister Barbara Creecy. Sanral spokesperson Vusi Mona said that specialist engineers are already at the scene assessing the bridge damage and planning repairs.

“The southbound carriageway over the bridge has been closed from Joyner Road, with traffic being diverted to alternative routes. Motorists should be cautious approaching the area,” said Mona.

Southbound traffic has been rerouted through Prospecton but this has caused significant congestion, which is impacting operations in the Prospecton Industrial Precinct. As a temporary solution, officials are considering converting Prospecton Road into a one-way southbound lane until the N2 southbound lanes can reopen.
