On October 31, Mammoloko Kubayi, minister of the Department of Human Settlements, and eThekwini Municipality mayor, Cyril Xaba, were joined by Siboniso Duma, MEC in the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Human Settlement to formally launch the Pilgrim X Informal Settlements Upgrade Project.
Minister Kubayi said there were 500 households and 392 informal structures in the area. This new project will yield 404 housing units with metered water, electricity, and sanitation, as well as social amenities such as parks, early childhood development centres, and places of worship. Kubayi urged residents of Pilgrim to support the appointed contractor in order for the project to be completed timeously.
“The project cannot be interrupted and the contractor must be fully supported while performing duties. Otherwise, the department will redirect funding, ” said Kubayi.
The project is funded by the Informal Settlements Upgrading Partnership Grant, and the Human Settlements Development Grant, a collaborative effort between national and provincial Human Settlements departments and eThekwini Municipality.
Mayor Xaba, expressed enthusiasm for the launch of the project and said construction would start in the second week of January.
“The anticipated completion date is November 2028. What is also important to note is that this upgrade is strategically located near economic opportunities, schools, healthcare facilities, and other crucial social amenities, addressing historical spatial inequalities,” said Xaba.
The Pilgrim informal settlement is not far from the 360-unit Kanku Road housing project which was completed and launched in 2023.
