“Residents and businesses are urged to maintain clean and hygienic surroundings, ensure goods sold are fit for consumption, and refrain from erecting illegal structures on public spaces,” said Zungu.
He added that the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to promote public health, environmental cleanliness, and compliance with municipal regulations within communities.
How to apply for an informal trading permit for stalls, markets, or non-demarcated areas
The City frequently advertises vacant trading stalls and retail market spaces. If applying for a specific space, or a non-demarcated permit (like a food trailer), the application must meet the following criteria:
• You must trade full-time.
• You must be unemployed or not operating any other business.
• You must not have another trading stall within the eThekwini Municipality area.
Required documents:
• A formal application letter stating the trading intent, goods to be sold, and region/stall of interest.
• A certified copy of your South African ID (or a valid work permit/legal documentation for foreign nationals).
• Full residential address and proof of address.
• Indication of your gender and proof of any physical disability, if applicable.
For non-demarcated spaces:
• A hand-drawn sketch of the site and a consent letter from a nearby establishment.
How to apply:
• Submit your letter and documents to the area manager at Sizakala Centre, the district office, or the contact person advertising the trading space.
