During August, two incidents of massive fish kill occurred in Isipingo Beach and Blue Lagoon in Durban, as a result of sewage contamination. Subsequent testing of seawater showed high levels of E. coli, leading to the closure of all beaches south of Durban except for Winklespruit Beach. The City has said drinking water has not been affected by this.
“The quality of water provided by the City continues to be of good quality and is safe to drink. The bulk drinking water is monitored by experts from Umgeni Water and by eThekwini Municipality according to the International Standard Organisation 17025 accredited laboratories. Water at distribution points is tested regularly as per the South African National Standard 241 for drinking water requirements,” read a statement released by eThekwini.
Beaches, however, remain closed, and all contact with seawater remains prohibited.
