A number of families in the area lost their homes in a landslide after heavy rains battered the province in April 2022. A decision was made to temporarily house them at the empty market stalls while the provincial government promised that all flood victims will get new houses.
Sibongile Ndlovu, a pensioner, is one of the victims as she lost her house along with most of her possessions. She said she is relieved that they have been moved to Ilfracombe where the provincial government is renting out housing units for them.
“It is much better where we are right now because we at least have running water and some sense of security. I now hope things are going to be sped up so we can get proper homes,” she said.

“This week, we facilitated the process of moving over 1 600 flood victims from various mass care shelters to more dignified accommodations. We have been meeting with all the victims in the shelters and working with them to find a lasting solution to their plight,” said Dube-Ncube.
eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said land has been identified where houses will be built for victims, and technicians were in the process of conducting tests to ensure its suitability.
