Athlone Park Primary collects bottle caps for a good cause

The bottle caps will be donated to a nearby school which will in turn receive a wheelchair.

ONE of Athlone Park Primary Schools’ classes has won a beach-clean-up outing with Clean Surf Project after collecting the most bottle caps – for a good cause.

Over the last few weeks, learners were challenged to collect bottle caps to donate to a school in Umkomaas, who, in exchange for the caps, will receive a wheelchair. The project was initiated by a head of department (HOD), Cheryl Patrick, who used this project as an assembly item to present to the school the importance of giving back.

The winners, Yeshnee Naicker’s Grade Two class, will be going on an outing to the beach with representatives from Clean Surf Project, along with their teacher, the HOD and school principal John Vorster.

The learners will be picking up litter as well as studying the impact that litter and plastic have on the environment.

The school’s social media and marketing person, Jessica Hill, said this is one of many ‘service to the community’ initiatives for the year.

“One of our many goals for this year is to get back out there in our community. We believe in providing our learners with a multi-faceted approach to learning and viewing the world, in order to prepare them for life. Being hands-on and involved in a meaningful way teaches our learners how to give back and display characteristics such as empathy,” she said.
