WATCH: Hundreds displaced after fire razes Dakota Beach informal settlement

About 350 informal units were destroyed, leaving hundreds displaced. The Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum appeals for donations to assist those who have been relocated to the Isipingo Beach Civic Hall.

THE Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum (ACPF) makes an urgent appeal for donations to assist those who have been relocated to the Isipingo Beach Civic Hall.

According to a statement by eThekwini Municipality, about 350 informal units were destroyed, leaving hundreds of residents displaced. “The City’s firefighters worked through the night on April 15 to extinguish the blaze. They managed to save 50 dwellings. Displaced families have been relocated to a nearby community hall where they are being provided with necessities,” it read.

The ACPF appeals for the following items:

  • Non-perishable food, bottled water
  • Clothes
  • Toiletries
  • Female hygiene products
  • Blankets, bedding
  • Mattresses
  • Baby nappies, milk

ACPF chairperson, Merlene Matthew said if you can provide cooked meals, let them know in advance so as not to duplicate them.

All donations can be dropped off at Amanzimtoti Methodist Church at 3 Dingwall Road on Mondays to Fridays from 09:00 to 12:00.

If you are unable to drop off, contact your neighbourhood watch, sub-forum chairperson or patrollers.

Ward 97 councillor and eThekwini Municipality executive committee member, André Beetge, added that donations can be dropped off at Isipingo Beach Civic Hall at 18 Delta Road. “Angie Pakiri from the eThekwini Community Participation Unit and her staff will be receiving and distributing in a coordinated effort,” he said.

eThekwini Municipality confirms that there were no fatalities or injuries reported. “The City’s disaster management teams are currently conducting assessments to determine the nature and extent of further assistance needed,” read the statement.
