PHOTOS: Action-packed derby day at Kingsway High

It was impossible not to get caught up in the intensity of the event, which saw hockey, rugby and netball games being played against Hoërskool Suid-Natal.

KINGSWAY High School’s sports field and courts were action-packed and full of cheer on May 6, as the home teams hosted Hoërskool Suid-Natal for its first derby day of the year.

The school’s marketing assistant, Tumi Moumakwa, said derby days serve as an important tradition that brings learners, staff and community members together for a fun and exciting event.

The event, which is mainly held through the course of term two, saw various rugby, hockey and netball teams going head-to-head with the visiting side.

“True to Kingsway style and standards, the excitement was contagious, and it was impossible not to get caught up in the intensity of the event. The level of support and encouragement shown to each team was impressive and created an environment that was truly spirited. It was an incredibly fun, exciting and well-run event that left us feeling really proud. We appreciate and welcome more support from friends of Kingsway,” she said.

The school’s head of sport, Kelvin Klopper, thanked Hoërskool Suid-Natal for travelling to them and making the derby possible while contributing towards an amazing day.

“We would also like to thank all the teams involved on the day, and the excellent sportsmanship in which the matches were played. A huge thank you to all our sponsors for their continuous support,” he said.

Kingsway High School’s rugby teams won two games and lost two games, and the hockey girls lost both games and the netball teams won four games, drew one game and lost one game.

The results for the first team games are as follows: the rugby team won 27-24, the netball team won 30-21 and the girls’ hockey team lost 0-3. The first-team netball and rugby, as well as the U16A rugby team, remain unbeaten in their league this season.
