Isipingo Beach residents battle mosquitos

The problem has been experienced every time there is a bush overgrowth in the area.

SOME residents of Isipingo Beach are blaming the overflowing sewers and overgrown bushes for the mosquito infestation they are currently experiencing in the area.

Sammy Pillay said this has been happening every year over the past few years and he is scared that the mosquitos will bring diseases.

“Last year it was the same story. The overflowing manholes and uncut vegetation provide perfect conditions for these pests to breed. I won’t be surprised if there is a malaria outbreak,” said Pillay.

He added that mosquito repellents are expensive and most people cannot stock them up. After the matter was reported to relevant departments last year, bush and brush were cleared to allow for spraying, which finished in December.

Ward 90 councillor, Shad Nowbuth, said the infestation is being mostly experienced in lower Isipingo Beach around Barracuda Drive and the adjacent roads.

“This is certainly impacting negatively on the quality of life of all and has been escalated to the health department for intervention. The manager of vector control in the department has stated that the matter is receiving attention,” said Nowbuth.

He added that a progress report will be provided when more communication is received from the department.
