Non-profit organisations join hands to assist those in need

Every month, The Kolisi Foundation delivers 10 household hampers to Domino’s nutrition programme in Amanzimtoti, which then distributes them to other non-profit organisations.

THE Kolisi Foundation, through The Domino Foundation, distributes relief hampers to other non-profit organisations (NPOs) that take care of those in need.

Domino’s communication officer, Rowan Phillips, said there is much talk about the uncertainty of the future. “However, for one in five South Africans, what the next year, decade or century may or may not hold for humanity matters very little. Their concerns are for the next 24 hours and where their next meal is coming from,” he said.

This is an issue close to South African rugby captain Siya Kolisi’s heart. Phillips said, “He has known hunger and seen first-hand how food insecurity can be a critical factor in issues like gender-based violence, hampering children’s ability to learn at school and to perform on the sports field.”

He said The Kolisi Foundation confronts these and other issues and partners with organisations like Domino to alleviate the plight of vulnerable people.

Every month, The Kolisi Foundation delivers 10 household hampers to Domino’s nutrition programme in Amanzimtoti, which then distributes them to other partners who have vulnerable people under their wings.

Leader of the programme Cheryl Dann said the three NPOs who received the hampers are:

  • Sam’s Voice Sober Living for Men situated in Brighton Beach, which offers therapy, counselling and accommodation to people on the substance-addiction-recovery journey.
  • Wentworth-based Hope for the Heart, a pregnancy and families-support programme.
  • Usizo-Lomndeni, in Ezimangweni, just outside of Amanzimtoti, which assists abused women and family units with nutrition, education and child aftercare.

“There are so many families and individuals in our community going through a crisis. Domino’s kitchens are at Kingsway Church International in Doonside, and the congregation is wonderful and supplements the hampers with other non-perishables. But, the need is always bigger than what is generously donated,” she said.
