More than 100 veterans attended the event. Prizes were handed out, and Sassa veterans received Checkers vouchers.
THE Veterans Aid Fund (VAF) launched its ‘veterans in need’ campaign for 2024 in Amanzimtoti on January 24, to bring together heroes and celebrate service and unity.
The event, hosted at the Gereformeerde Church in the Tabor Hall, provided a warm welcome to every veteran with a goodie bag.

Liz Bouwer-Smalman, head of humanitarian affairs, said veterans from diverse units, reminiscing about service days in the 60s, 70s and 80s, converged, emphasising the strength and resilience of these brave men.
“The event was opened with a standing salute to all veterans who are no longer with us, as well as to those who could not attend the proceedings due to health reasons. Their contributions will always be recognised and never forgotten. It featured the beloved military song, Tweejaar, composed and sung by Philip Moolman, a director of the VAF. Quintus Smalman, CEO, delivered an informative session, highlighting the vital role every veteran played during their national service,” she said.
Bouwer-Smalman added that Steve Kemp, a well-known sportsman and adventurer, addressed the 110 veterans, emphasising ‘motivation and nothing is impossible’, as well as the importance of accepting every challenge.
“Throughout the day, veterans shared experiences, laughter and touching moments, with prizes awarded and a men’s veterans choir singing well-known songs. Checkers vouchers worth R500 were also distributed to the Sassa veterans in need,” she said.
As the event concluded, Bouwer-Smalman said the spirit of unity and camaraderie shone through, leaving lasting memories.
“The campaign’s proceedings ended with the famous song, Forty Days, symbolising soldiers’ transition from the army to civilian life. The campaign showcased the unwavering commitment of the VAF to care for those who served with pride and honour,” she said.
