Voting registration numbers ‘disappointingly low’ in Amanzimtoti

For those who missed the voters’ registration weekend, there is still time to register online via the IEC website.

DESPITE facing arguably the most important election since 1994, the number of registrations experienced over the weekend of February 3 and 4 was disappointingly low.

This is according to Ward 97 councillor André Beetge, who said in the build-up towards elections, more parties, each founded in a different ideology, appear to be entering the political arena to contest for power.

“Considering that 55% of eligible voters either didn’t register or bother to vote in 2021, but 100% have either an opinion, a complaint or are dissatisfied . . . Despite efforts to remind, request and beg them to make a difference by actually registering and voting, they just didn’t bother to turn out on the registration weekend,” he said.

Beetge said, “This ‘non-participation, cannot be bothered, got nothing to do with me’ attitude is exceedingly obvious among the youth, the very people on whom the future of the country depends. Fortunately, it is not too late yet.

“Until such time as the president announces the election date, which he has not (but it can happen at any moment), registration is still possible online via the IEC website at https://www.elections.org.za/pw/,” said Beetge.

Login to the IEC website from your smartphone or electronic device, complete the personal detail questionnaire and address details, upload a photo of your bar-coded ID or smartcard and receive and enter the Pin.
