Community members and representatives are out in full force on the court’s premises, protesting and demanding that bail be denied.

During Werner’s last appearance on February 5, Magistrate Zama Nyuswa adjourned the case until today (February 22) to make her ruling.

De Jager is charged with killing his wife, Reverend Liezel de Jager, on October 2021, at their home in Amanzimtoti. The investigation ground to a halt until the intervention of Action Society, a civil rights group, saw it being transferred to the SAPS National Cold Case Investigative Unit, which made the arrest on November 23, 2023.

The state has alleged that De Jager planned the death of his wife, Rev Liezel de Jager, to benefit from life insurance policies totalling R3.29 million.

The state is opposing bail as it has argued that he is a flight risk and may interfere with the witnesses. The state also believes he may commit suicide as it claims he has tried 12 times to take his own life.
