Amanzimtoti fishing fanatic turns 94 years old

Apart from her beloved pastime of fishing, she finds joy in visiting the casino, sewing and nurturing her cherished plants.

BARBARA Wehrle of Amanzimtoti celebrated her 94th birthday on March 20, surrounded by loved ones and inundated with heartfelt phone calls.

She ended off her special day by indulging in some leisurely gambling at the Suncoast Casino and reminiscing about her fishing days.

Looking back at her long and vibrant life, Wehrle said the key to a long-lasting life is to stay active and take good care of oneself.

Born in Umzinto, her journey led her to meet her beloved husband, Alf, in 1947, before they tied the knot in 1956 and subsequently moved to Amanzimtoti. Her passion for fishing was instilled in her by her mother at a young age, who frequented the Durban pier as seafood was the only meat she ate.

“One of my proudest moments was in April of 1966 when I reeled in an impressive 30kg salmon in the waters of Amanzimtoti,” she said with a smile on her face.

Given the choice, she said she would gladly spend every day casting her line at the beach.

Wehrle’s family holds a special place in her heart. She has five children, one of whom has since passed, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
