Councillor André Beetge confirmed that a commitment had been received to deploy additional law enforcement personnel during the festive season.
He said staggered shifts for metro police and SAPS were being implemented to sustain a constant presence while emphasis would remain on expected high influx dates and high volume areas.
“Random roadblocks, stop and search and other operations are conducted in conjunction with other agencies. Alcohol is not allowed on beaches and if found, it is confiscated and poured out on the spot,” he said.
eThekwini Municipality mayor Cyril Xaba urged the new officers to always maintain high standards of professionalism, dignity and integrity when executing their duties.
“Remain firm when enforcing compliance with the city’s by-laws. We welcome the recruits and their deployment reaffirms our commitment to strengthening safety and security in the city. We remain committed to making the city safer for residents and visitors,” said Xaba.
Head of the metro police, Commissioner Sibonelo Mchunu said the recruitment of the 500 officers was just the beginning of efforts to bolster crime-fighting initiatives.
