Motorists to use M4 until further notice following N2 heist

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes as authorities work to clear the scene on the N2 in the vicinity of the cement factory.

FOLLOWING the closure of the N2 due to a cash-in-transit robbery between the cement factory and Higginson Highway earlier today (February 4), motorists have been urged to use alternative routes while the police process the crime scene.

A cash-in-transit van travelling north came under heavy automatic gunfire, causing it to leave the road and come to a rest on its roof after the assailants rammed it just after 06:00. According to the first respondents at the scene, the brazen robbers bombed it twice before accessing the cash and fleeing.

According to Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics, one person died and seven others were injured during the robbery.

At the time of publication, the N2 was closed in both directions between Edwin Swales Drive and Higginson Highway. Motorists travelling between Durban and Isipingo, or the South Coast are urged to use the M4 until further notice.
