Economic committee tours Prospecton industries
The site visit aimed to give municipal officials insight into the various operations and challenges faced by the industry roleplayers.
THE Prospecton / Isipingo industrial area, home to some of South Africa’s largest companies, contributes a substantial 5.3% to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). This economic powerhouse remains a key driver of employment and job creation, bolstered by ongoing collaboration with the eThekwini Municipality and government stakeholders.

As part of its commitment to support the region’s growth, eThekwini’s Economic Development Unit hosted a manufacturing study tour on April 4. The tour showcased leading local businesses, including Toyota South Africa Motors, NCS Resins, and Dyefin Textiles.
According to eThekwini spokesperson Gugu Sisilana, the initiative aimed to shine a spotlight on the manufacturing sector’s vital role in driving economic development and creating employment opportunities. Members of the municipality’s Economic Development and Planning Committee took part in the site visits, gaining first-hand insights into the operations and challenges faced by key industrial players.
“The tour also highlighted key industry clusters supported by the unit — such as the Durban Automotive, Chemical, and Clothing and Textile cluster. These clusters benefit from the committee’s ongoing backing and help foster collaboration and growth in the region,” said Sisilana.
Ward 90 councillor Shad Nowbuth, who was part of the delegation, stressed the importance of strengthening ties between local government and industry.
“I come from an economic development background, and I understand that job creation hinges on continued development. These companies employ thousands and contribute significantly to our economy. We must support them and ensure they remain in our region, otherwise, they could relocate, which would be a major loss for our area,” he said.
Following the tour, the committee shared its findings and insights with the municipal council to inform further planning and strategic decision-making.
