Pick n Pay offers condolences after death of Kingsburgh employee

The death of a Kingsburgh Pick n Pay employee sparked public outrage after it was revealed her body remained on the shop floor for hours as business continued.

FOLLOWING the uproar over the incident where a Kingsburgh Pick n Pay employee died on duty on May 6, the store has released a statement in response.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our staff member at the Pick n Pay Kingsburgh franchise store. This is an incredibly difficult situation for everyone concerned, and the franchisee worked closely with the authorities throughout, which guided their response. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her husband, the family and her colleagues during this difficult time. The store is providing counselling support to all affected staff members and is in contact with the family to provide any assistance they may need in planning her funeral,” it read.

The incident caused a major uproar in the community after it emerged that the employee’s corpse had remained on the shop floor for almost three hours while customers were allowed to shop and staff were made to continue working.

Events leading to the female employee’s death are unknown. An inquest docket was opened at the Amanzimtoti police station for investigation.
