The arrest, part of a larger operation by the Coastal Marine Task Force (CMTF), highlights the issue of illegal fishing and the black market for marine resources. The suspect, an elderly man, was apprehended for fishing without a permit and possessing fish below the legal size limit. In a statement, the CMTF said the incident occurred on July 8, and the operation focused on enforcing marine regulations during the sardine run.
“The team encountered the suspect at the south side pier, where his suspicious behaviour and the presence of ice and a cooler box containing undersized fish led to his arrest. He now faces charges under the Marine Living Resources Act,” it said.
According to the CMTF, this arrest was part of a broader effort to disrupt the illegal fishing syndicate that fuels the black market for marine resources.
“The CMTF is actively targeting both fishermen and buyers, demonstrating a zero-tolerance approach to illegal fishing activities. The task force is supported by various agencies and individuals dedicated to protecting South Africa’s marine life,” the statement read.
