City extends water levy by two more years

The surcharge, introduced three years ago, has already generated R623.8m, which, the municipality said, has been ring-fenced for water and sanitation projects.

THE eThekwini executive council has approved the extension of the R1.50 per kilolitre infrastructure surcharge for another two years to fund upgrades to the city’s ageing water and sewer systems.

The surcharge, introduced three years ago, has already generated R623.8m, which the municipality said has been ring-fenced for water and sanitation projects. According to municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana, the funds have supported several mechanical, electrical and electronic upgrades, including work at the Southern Wastewater Treatment Works.

Mayor Cyril Xaba stated that the surcharge is crucial to meeting the growing demand for water and sanitation services.

“It will help us curb water losses and sewer spillages as a substantial amount will go towards repair and maintenance,” he said.

The surcharge will remain at R1.50 per kilolitre, excluding VAT. The city’s chief financial officer has been tasked with submitting quarterly expenditure reports to track how the funds are utilised.
