Shot on location in Durban’s cane fields, The Cane Cutter moves between the past and present, connecting love, identity, and belonging across generations. It is a story of heritage, hope, and the enduring spirit of Durban’s Indian community. At its heart is Amisha, played by Dr Kajal Lutchminarain, a single mother breaking free from an abusive past, and Dev, played by Razeen Dada, a law student retracing his grandfather’s indenture journey through film. Their story mirrors the hopes, heartbreaks, and legacies of those who came before them.

Directed by Dr Eubulus Timothy and produced by Shan Moodley, the cast includes Shika Maharaj as Priya, Vanessa Marawa as Prudence, and Adam Dore as Zack, bringing depth to the modern storyline.
The film opens on November 16, to mark 165 years since the arrival of the first Indian indentured labourers.
