Elderly equipped for self-defence with pepper spray bottles

In a pre-emptive and precautionary act of kindness, a local neighbourhood watch equipped elderly residents with pepper sprays.

THE Warner Beach South Neighbourhood Watch (WBSNW) equipped the elderly residents of Jabulani Home for the Aged with bottles of pepper spray recently in an effort to provide them with an effective means of self-defence.

This comes after the neighbourhood watch’s Craig Upton visited the home last month to deliver an informative talk, and explain to residents what the group does, from patrolling the streets to operating cameras around the neighbourhood and assisting police and security companies.

“Many of the residents walk to the shops or travel early in the mornings to visit hospitals, and having pepper spray provides them with some form of protection should they ever find themselves in a difficult situation where they need to defend themselves,” said Upton.

WBSNW vice-chairman Upton and PRO Karin MacRae presented the 15 bottles of pepper spray. Leslie Meyer accepted the donation on behalf of Jabulani, and was taught how they work. The bottles will be kept at reception for when residents go out, and will be signed for in order for every resident to be able to adequately protect themselves when necessary.
