Doonside roads upgrade set to start
Ward 97 councillor André Beetge said he recently met with the developers to raise several key considerations before the start of work.
MOTORISTS using Seadoone and Umfuleni roads in Doonside can look forward to smoother traffic flow in the months ahead, as an upgrade project is scheduled to begin on October 13.

The work, which includes the widening of Umfuleni Road and the installation of a new three-way signal-controlled intersection, is expected to be completed before the start of the festive season. As part of the project, Ward 97 councillor André Beetge said Umfuleni Road will be widened towards the new shopping centre development, including backfilling and the construction of a retaining wall to support the roadside. The corner from Seadoone Road into Umfuleni Road will be recessed to accommodate a slipway. At the same time, the exit from Umfuleni into Seadoone Road will also be recessed into the current verge of the BP garage, creating an inland slipway to allow smoother merging.
Beetge said he recently met with the developers to raise key considerations before the start of work.
“We cautioned the developer about the presence of underground services within the development area, as any disturbance could have a knock-on effect on nearby residents, especially with the rainy season approaching. We appreciate their assurance that the work will be carried out with minimal disruption to traffic and residents and that flag-wavers will be on-site to assist motorists during construction,” said Beetge.
He added that the developer has also committed to avoiding late-night or weekend work to limit noise and inconvenience for the surrounding residential community.

He also stated that the improvements would go a long way in addressing traffic congestion and safety concerns in the area once these are completed.
“This upgrade is a much-needed step towards easing movement in and out of Umfuleni Road, particularly during peak hours. We ask motorists for patience while this important work is underway,” he said.
