The donation is expected to bring a much-needed boost to disabled accessibility options on the Sapphire Coast.

SAPPHIRE Coast Tourism proudly rolled a second beach wheelchair onto Amanzimtoti Main Beach thanks to a donation from Umkomaas-based sand supplier, Moodley’s Sands, on November 20.

The beach wheelchair, also known as sand cruisers, boast bigger wheels than an average wheelchair, and are specially designed to float on water, making them ideal for those living with disabilities to enjoy the beach.

Sapphire Coast Tourism’s Romy Wenzel extended sincere gratitude to Moodley’s Sands, and to all participating stakeholders for their ongoing support in advancing universal accessibility along the coast.

She added that Amanzimtoti Main Beach now offers two beach wheelchairs, ensuring that differently-abled visitors can enjoy full access to the sand, sea, and the joy of the coastline. The first was donated to Sapphire Coast Tourism last year by Reece Smith, a quadriplegic, after local companies pitched in to buy it for him.

Virashnie Moodley, of Moodley’s Sands, said that the donation forms part of the company’s commitment to community upliftment and inclusive participation.

“We are proud to donate a wheelchair that will provide access to water-based activities for individuals with disabilities. We remain dedicated to supporting initiatives that promote equality and shared experiences,” said Moodley.

Ward 97 councillor André Beetge was elated at the donation. He commended Moodley’s Sands, “It’s people like you that make a big difference. This sand cruiser enables the disabled to go out into the waves and enjoy amenities that able-bodied individuals do.”
