Donate a teddy bear to brighten a child’s day

The MEG Foundation has started a collection drive for new and pre-loved teddy bears to be donated to sickly children.

A HEARTWARMING project driven by the MEG Foundation, a non-profit organisation committed to raising funds for sick children with disabilities, has garnered support from Sapphire Coast Tourism and Wheels on Waves, bringing its teddy bear drive to Amanzimtoti Main beach.

The organisation’s hope is to spread joy this festive season and meet its goal of 1 000 teddy bears, which will find new homes with sick children in hospitals, disability centres and disadvantaged communities. It will be running until December 21.

Therosha Govender, of the MEG Foundation, said that the initiative invites the public to donate new or pre-loved teddy bears in good, clean condition.

“These cuddly companions will primarily be distributed to children in Albert Luthuli Hospital and RK Khan Hospital, with additional deliveries planned for disability centres and children in impoverished or disadvantaged communities,” said Govender.

The project has drop-off points at Malvern, Chatsworth and Phoenix, and has now added one on the Sapphire Coast. Teddy bears can be dropped off at The Surfing Bean at Amanzimtoti Main beach.

“No child should ever feel alone, especially during Christmas. A simple teddy bear can mean the world to a child in hospital. It’s a symbol of comfort, care, and hope. As the festive season approaches, the MEG Foundation reminds everyone that the true spirit of Christmas lies in giving and compassion,” said Govender.

The foundation encourages individuals, schools, businesses and community groups to get involved and help make the drive a success, whether through donations, collection partnerships or spreading the word.

The MEG Foundation will also be joining Sapphire Coast Tourism for its Sapphire Sizzling Summer programme this year on December 21 from 09:00 until 14:00. The event includes beach Olympics, music, games, prizes and giveaways and fun in the sun, all free of charge. Show love for the NPO’s cause by bringing along a cuddly teddy bear.
