With all southern bathing beaches from Isipingo to Umgababa open, lifeguards had their hands full managing the excited masses. This resulted in numerous rescues, and no loss of life.

According to Ward 97 councillor André Beetge, other than several alcohol-induced scuffles and one late afternoon stabbing on Beach Road between two individuals known to each other, which resulted in a female being referred to hospital, no serious injuries or major incidents were reported.

“With Friday and the weekend again promising excellent beach weather, law-enforcement structures will undoubtedly be under pressure. This may result in temporary road closures in an effort to manage traffic flow,” Beetge said.

Residents along Beach Road are cautioned to take this into account when planning to leave or return to their residences, as congestion may occur. Even those in possession of permits could experience delays.

“While the unnecessary discharge of fireworks remains a thorn in the community’s side, there are simply insufficient resources to respond to every complaint,” Beetge reiterated.

Officer deployment is therefore prioritised in line with a carefully planned threat analysis.

Residents are also reminded that the courts are not yet fully operational, while roadblocks aimed at deterring driving under the influence remain prevalent.
