Insightful recycling workshop held in Lovu
Attendees were also taught how to manage waste, including turning it into compost for gardening.
THE community of Lovu township learned about the importance of recycling waste and how it can be of benefit to the environment and waste pickers at a workshop hosted by Manaza Recycling on February 27.

Held at the township’s community hall in Section C, Lindiwe Cele of Manaza Recycling said the workshop aimed to spread awareness and teach people how to manage waste in their areas. It also served as the launch of the Ekasi Waste Programme, which aims to promote recycling in townships. She also said that unmanaged waste ends up in drains and in the environment, where it can take 100 years or more for plastic to decompose.
“Most of the items that go to bins can be recycled. We only have one planet, and recycling reduces environmental harm, conserves natural resources, saves energy, and drives economic growth for our waste ambassadors,” said Cele.
Manaza Recycling gets waste from its ambassadors who operate in Isipingo, Durban, Umhlanga, KwaMakhutha, uMkomaas, Scottburgh, Pennington, and Lovu.
“Once collected, we take it to our depot, where final sorting is done daily. It is then distributed to manufacturers to reprocess it for new products,” she said.
Attendees were also taught how to turn waste into compost.
