eThekwini Exco pays Sakhithemba an oversight visit [Video]

ETHEKWINI Municipality’s executive committee (Exco) members conducted an oversight visit to the Sakhithemba Homeless Shelter in Lower Illovo on June 2.

Led by the mayor, Cyril Xaba, the members were inspecting the progress made and the work still outstanding ahead of the proposed November deadline to finish the project.

When the council adopted the motion to revive the facility in late 2024, R13.6 million was earmarked for the project. However, the changing of plans and the expansion to double the project’s scope to house 800 individuals saw the plans’ expenditure balloon to the current R103 million and counting.

The completion date has been revised from October 2026 to early 2027.
