IN OBSERVANCE of International Coastal Clean-Up Day on September 19, scores of volunteers descended on Ezimbokodweni Beach and other beaches to clear waste choking the coastline and estuaries.

Hosted by the Clean Surf Project, the Ezimbokodweni Beach event drew volunteers ranging from learners and community members to recycling companies and other stakeholders. eThekwini Municipality also took part in the annual event and cleaned Dakota Beach and Reunion Beach.

This year’s event was held under the theme “Sea the Change”, and it highlighted the importance of collective action in protecting and preserving the coastal and marine ecosystems.

In a statement, eThekwini said keeping beaches and the City clean is a shared responsibility.

“Residents, businesses and visitors all have a role to play by disposing of waste responsibly, avoiding littering and illegal dumping. Together, we can protect our coastline and contribute to a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable City for present and future generations,” read the statement.

The Clean Surf Project oversaw the collection of 43 bags of litter, which it said was 43 bags worth of waste that was stopped from washing into the ocean.
