EDITOR – It is with concern that I write this letter regarding the presence of at least six prostitutes plying their trade daily along Andrew Zondo Road in the vicinity of Mayville Terrace.
As a resident of Lagoon Point in Mayville Terrace, I have to run this gauntlet almost every day.
I find it extremely distasteful and unsavoury having to endure their waves and blowing of kisses as I drive past. What amazes but does not surprise me, is the apathy displayed by the police.

They do nothing to stop this scourge that is blighting our community. I have on more than one occasion seen a police van stop next to a prostitute with the occupant engaged in conversation with her before driving off. The CCPO have removed these prostitutes from time to time but it is not long before they return.
Many of these prostitutes are drug addicts, and one in particular can often be seen staggering onto and off the road in a daze.
Is this what we are allowing to happen to our community?
This gradual but persistent degradation of our town, which has sunk into one of filth and squalor, is the face of where we live – the face which we show our children, tourists and anybody who passes through our town. I wonder if any of the local police live in our town? If so, is this acceptable to them?
For me this decline represents total apathy on the part of the authorities and a breakdown and non-enforcement of by-laws with commercial buildings in the CBD being used for residential purposes, vagrants sleeping on the post office steps, mattresses in an alley around the corner from the post office no doubt used by prostitutes and their customers.
The list goes on…
