Toti 69er on Sunday
On Sunday, the Burry Stander Sardine Classic was held down in Port Shepstone.
WITH the forecast of cold, wet weather creeping up from the Cape, Amanzimtoti Cycle Club’s riders were scrambling to fit in as many rides as they could last week, before it descended on KZN.
There were quite a few mountain bikers who set out on Saturday morning from the grass patch in Illovo, including two visitors from Bloemfontein. They had heard about the hills of Natal and wanted to experience them.
So, because the Toti Mambas never disappoint, they were taken on a expedition that they will definitely tell tales about at home. The group re-visited a few of the old trails that they used to frequent quite often in years gone by. And where there is a downhill, there is always an up-hill to follow. The downhill tracks were exhilarating but the up-hills were mean and had a few of the riders off their bikes pushing. But at the end of the meagre 30 odd km, everyone went home tired, sore and happy. Once again, we pleased the visitors who enjoyed the experience of KZN freedom.
On Sunday, the Burry Stander Sardine Classic was held in Port Shepstone. It was reported to be an excellent race with good track. Again, the Toti clan did well.
Bruce Koll and Andre Hooiberg, decided to ride the Durban promenade on Sunday morning, as Andre is making a comeback from a nasty injury. The promenade now goes right down to the Umgeni bird park and they said that it makes for nice fast, easy pedalling if you go early enough. The best part is that there are restaurants on the way.
Barry Walker has added about 400m of new track at Lords. This is a bit rough right now and needs to be ridden, so get on those bikes and head on down there. A pair of running shoes on the track also does it the world of good, but just listen out for the call of ‘track’ behind you if you explore it that way.
The club’s race, the Toti 69er is on Sunday, 13 July. If you are a motorist, please be patient and watch out for the competitors, as they do not really watch out for the cars, especially when they are lacking oxygen and tired. There will be marshalls directing the traffic at unsafe places. We have a reputation of putting on a safe race and it would be good to be able to hold that. If anyone is available to help marshal this race, we are still looking for marshals.
