THE KZN Women's Golf Association inter club championships are now only two weeks away, and the organising committee have been hard at work ensuring that the visitors to Amanzimtoti Golf Club are catered for in every possible way, and so put Amanzimtoti on everyone’s 'favourite places' list. The rains have come in good time, the fairways are perking up, and the greens are playing better than ever before.
The entry for the tournament is officially at 117 teams, with four gold division teams, 43 silver division teams and the balance in the bronze division. The teams all play foursomes golf, the gold and silver divisions playing medal over the three days of competition, while the ‘bronzies’ play for stableford points.
Inter club moves around the province annually, alternating between inland and coastal courses. The last time the championships were held in the greater Amanzimtoti area was in 2002 when Umbogintwini was the host club.
Since the inception of this tournament, Toti has only ever won one and a half trophies. The half was for a tied win in 1999, when Robyn Hutton from Toti and Cathy Busby of Port Edward combined to enter a gold division team and shared the championship trophy with Victoria CC. Then in 2011, Shelley Naylor and Brenda Morgan won the Florence Harvey trophy for winning the silver division while playing in the inter club at Eshowe.
This year Toti has seven teams competing, three silver and four bronze. Jacqui Porrill and Charmain Stone head up the silver division challengers, with Brenda Morgan and Liz Donald teaming up this year, and the regular team of Gerda Heydenrych and Gill Symons hoping to get the monkey off their backs and finally succeed at inter club. The bronze teams comprise two regular pairings in Lass Davis and Colleen Smit, and Jebby Dyson and Sue Daniels, and both of these teams have the potential to shoot the lights out. New pairings are Jackie Dunlop and Sue Conlan, and Estelle Binnekade and Cheryl Flutter, all with great dark horse potential.
Of special importance every year at the inter club prizegiving is the presentation of the Dennis Done good fellowship trophy, which is awarded each year to the person who has offered noteworthy service to women's golf in the province.
To the management and club members who will be involved in the running of the tournament, all the best for a wonderful competition.
Results from the week saw the IPS attract a small field of 18 players last Wednesday , and Errol Woods took the honours with a fine 40 points, followed by Tommy McNaughton on 37. On Friday the nine hole sundowner was contested by 23 players, with Pat Fowler leading the pack by way of a count out on 21 points, followed by Vish Govender and Dillon van Rensburg, also on 21.
The men and women all played medal on Saturday. Gill Symons took top spot in the silver division in the women's competition on 73 nett, followed by Jacqui Porrill on 75 nett. In the bronze section Sue Boucher beat Estelle Binnekade by a count out on 73 nett. These two also achieved two-clubs on the 7th hole, with Sue narrowly missing a hole in one, leaving the ball a mere six inches from the cup. The least number of putts went to Jacqui Porrill who only needed 29 putts in the course of her round of golf.
In the men’s A division, Clive Fryer came out tops with 80/71, followed by Kalvin van Rensburg with 74/72. B division winner was Wimpy Nel on 84/71, with Rex Parsons on 87/72 in second place. Willem Pieterse won the C division with 90/69, and Brian Stewart followed him on 87/70. The best gross on the day went to Kalvin van Rensburg, and the best nett was won by Willem Pieterse. The two nearest the pins on the 7th and 17th went to Clive Fryer and Nico Vogel. The jackpot was not won so carries over to next week, and Clive Hill didn’t win the attendance prize as he had already left the clubhouse.
AGC welcomes all visitors to the area to play a round of golf on its beautiful course. Phone the pro shop on 031-9024144 and speak to David or Jasper to book a tee off time. Carts are also available for hire if necessary.
