UGC applauds teen’s hole-in-one

Composite league was played at Royal Durban Golf Club on Sunday, 6 September.

AS they say in the vernacular ‘spring has sprung, the grass is riz’ and warmer weather is on its way.

Although there were a few cold, snappy days earlier this week, everyone can look forward to one of the best times of the year, the other being April and May.

Belated congratulations to one of Umkomaas Golf Club’s (UGC) junior members, Vean Oosthuizen of Kuswag Skool on scoring a hole-in-one on the 4th hole a few weeks ago during a school league match at the tender age of 16. Well done, Vean and may it be the first of many in future years.

Wednesday welcomed regular visitors Mike Harvard and Mike and Magda Espach to the club and individual stableford competition at prize giving. The winner, by three shots after testing out his new driver, was Jimmy Pickavance on 44 points followed by Dave Kemp in second spot with 41 points. In third place was the ever-effervescent, Piet Vermaak with 40 points.

Saturday was the Toyota monthly medal with not too many players this month. The winner of the A division was Doc Greg Thiel on a great 69 followed by runner-up Mike Cromhout on 70. Graham Coxell took the B division mug on an excellent 69 with Gregg Andersson the runner-up on 71. The C division, always well attended, was won on a count-out by club captain, Peter Toward from Ken Koster, both on 70. The women didn’t play medal but thanks to Val Hazell, Michelle van der Merwe and Sabiha Bacaus for filling in the gaps with the guys. The jackpot was won by Peter Toward with 11 points but the hidden birdie is still lost out on the 9th hole. There were only two two-clubs, both on the 4th, one for Deneys Williamson and the other for Jimmy Spear. John Gillett won the prize in the ‘non skills department’ attendance draw and Patricia Thompson, fresh from her long trip abroad, scooped the ‘birds’ in the football sweep with Weston Super Mare.

Next Saturday, 12 September, the competition is the fourball betterball with social golf on Sunday, although there is a small group playing during the morning. Call the club on 039-973-1042 for a tee time.

An early reminder that the club’s AGM will take place on Friday, 23 October at 5.30pm. It is still very early but please diarise this date as this is your chance to have your say at the meeting.

Composite league was played at Royal Durban Golf Club on Sunday, 6 September. This league is played between Umkomaas, Selborne and Royal Durban Golf Clubs and although Umkomaas came second this time around (Selborne won on the day), the final game will be at UGC in October. Well done to UGC’s team on their result and good luck to them all when it’s home-course advantage next month.

The Geriatrics are tee-ing off slightly earlier than they have been as Spring is here at last, so be at the club at 6.45am for a tee-off at 7am only on Tuesdays and Fridays. Your contacts are Keith on 083-305-5740 and Graham on 083-325-5705.

KidzGolf is still on a Saturday morning and all ‘kids’ are welcome to go along and learn about golf. Devlyn and his assistant, Lindani will be at the club from 8am to welcome the youngsters to their weekly session.

Six-pin is also a popular past-time on a Friday afternoon, starting at around 2.45pm. Play six holes and de-stress by taking the week’s frustrations out on a little white ball. Since spring is upon us, the braai evenings will start again, so watch this space for more info.

Good luck to the girls playing in the Lewis Reynolds tournament next Sunday at Selborne. Play well and enjoy the day.
