Lee-anne smashes KZN record
Other medal winners included Fransune du Toit, Roald Bothma, Magnus Francke, Luan Grobler, Dwayne Trollip, Rishen Archary and Anele Blake.
AMANZIMTOTI Athletics Club’s juniors excelled when they returned with a total of seven gold, six silver and four bronze medals from the KZN junior track and field championships held at Chatsworth Stadium earlier this month.
The club won more medals than some of the 11 KZN district teams that competed in the team competition.
Lee-anne Blake and Hlengiwe Zuma were double gold medal winners. They won two KZN titles each in the 1,500m and 800m events for girls 15 and girls 19 respectively.
Lee-anne’s remarkable 2min10.77sec winning time in the G15 800m smashed the previous KZN record by around nine seconds. Both her 800m and 1,500m (4min39.43sec) winning times were also the fastest times of the championships for all girls’ age group winners.
Other medal winners included Fransune du Toit, Roald Bothma, Magnus Francke, Luan Grobler, Dwayne Trollip, Rishen Archary and Anele Blake.
While Lee-anne’s performances were of a very high standard, one of the top track performances by an Amanzimtoti athlete was achieved by Sesi Mbatha with her remarkable time of 57.99sec for the girls 15 400m, the second fastest 400m of the championships by girls of all ages.
As recognition for the standard of their performances, six of the club’s juniors have been selected for the KZN junior athletics team that will compete at the ASA national junior athletics championships in Germiston from 31 March to 2 April. They are Lee-anne Blake, Luan Grobler, Sesi Mbatha, Dwayne Trollip, Rishen Archary and Hlengiwe Zuma. Lee-anne, Sesi, Anele Blake (all Kingsway pupils) and Dwayne Trollip (Kuswag) were also included in the KZN schools team for the SA secondary schools championships in Bloemfontein.
